VET NOTES
Checked in habitat without handling. Bird is very active, flies up and clings to top of habitat when disturbed. There is no discernible difference in use between right and left leg, normal weight-bearing. Did not grab and weigh.
Will recheck in 2 weeks but I see no reason why this bird cannot be moved somewhere bigger as soon as we do not need as a cohort for the babies. Dr Gardner

Anesthetized w/ Isoflurane for recheck radiographs:
Rads - R illium indistinct, due to callousing. Hip alignment appears normal, able to pull both legs down evenly.
Eyes examined - there is some residual pathology OD but it appears quiet.
P: OK to d/c Pred OD. Move to slightly larger mew and evaluate for symmetrical use of legs out there. I would not try to exercise for at least a week yet. Dr Gardner

I was asked to evaluate radiographs - agree that there appears to be an right illium fracture, but there is minimal displacement. I would expect him to use that leg less than the left but as long as he seems to have good neurological function (able to grip, place, etc when necessary) should be cage rested and I would expect a decent outcome. History:
Bird was found next to the road along Seacret Shortcut Rd in Monroe NC. Finder was able to get the bird contained and drove it to us right away.


Exam:
Bird was very quiet and kept eyes shut. The left eye was blinking and mainly staying closed but the right eye was crusted shut with gunk-no blood present. Eye rinse was used to clean the eyelids to get the eye open. Fresh blood was present on the beak and the nares were blocked by dried blood. The very tip of the beak- about 1cm -was broken off and it was found in the mouth. There was brusing inside the mouth that went down into the throat. A good bit of blood was swabbed out of the mouth but most of it was not fresh and bright red. The choana was still very slightly bleeding. The right ear had some brusing and swelling present. The keel was also swollen and slightly bruised.

Both eyes had damage. OS has an opaque area centrally about 2cm long but did not pick up the stain. This made it a little difficult to fully see into that eye.


Treatment given:
0.31cc Buprenorphine IM
0.06cc Meloxicam IM
30cc LRS SQ
Prednisone OD

Plan:
Prognosis is guarded due to extent of damage in eyes. They will need to be rechecked Monday by SC or ME. Radiographs also need to be taken to confirm no fractures. Tramadol will be given for a few days for pain and then continue with meloxicam PO.
